Dr. Charles Tator, Canadian Concussion Centre, Toronto Western Hospital: Some Advances in Solving the Mysteries of Concussion
Concussions continue to be a major public health problem in Canada because we generate so many concussions in our country (150,000 yearly in Ontario alone), and not everyone recovers. Research has been intense worldwide, and we have made some progress towards improved recognition and management. My talk will cover some of the advances in our knowledge of the biomarkers, symptomatology and public policy towards concussion including Rowan’s Law legislation and regulations, and federal initiatives as well. The consequences of concussion will be featured including second impact syndrome, persisting concussion symptoms especially mental health disorders, and brain neurodegenerative disorders including chronic traumatic encephalopathy. Some of the current problems will also be discussed.
